In Japan and around the world, people will gather in early August to float lanterns in remembrance of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war. "Terror, Tragedy, Inspiration, Service" A showing of the Sundance Award-winning documentary Sergio. Based on Pulitzer-Prize winner Samantha Powers biographical book, Sergio: One Man's Fight to Save the World,revolves around the life and last hours of United Nations Diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello - one of 22 killed by a terrorist attack on UN Headquarters at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad on August 19, 2003.  Sergio had worked for the UN for 34 years and was known as the official to be handed some of the most difficult tasks. World Humanitarian Day was designated to be August 19 in a resolution of the General Assembly marking the day he and his colleagues died. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door.$5 for students and seniors and $10 for others. On Aug. 27, luncheon discussion to follow the showing at the Albany Twin Theatre. 27 Wed, 6:30-9:00pm. Dinner Forum: The Future of Nuclear Energy - Lessons from the Fukushima Tragedy for the International Atomic Energy Agency. Speaker: Paul Carroll, Program Director, Ploughshares Fund. Paul Carroll has expertise on nuclear weapons policy, the production process, and the relationship to nuclear energy. He is a former program analyst with the U.S. Department of Energy and former research analyst, with the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment. Currently he is responsible for managing grantsmaking at Ploughshares Fund.  Ploughshares Fund supports a global network of experts and advocates who are now poised to realize the vision of a nuclear weapon-free world. Firoza Chic Dabby is the director of the Asian & Pacific Islander Institue on Domestic Violence (API Institute) at the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), a national health policy organization dedicated to strengthening policies, programs, and research to improve the heath and well-being of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific islanders. Ms. Dabby directs the API Institute, a national resource center engaged in advocacy, research, policy, training, technical assistance provision and analyzing critical issues on violence against Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander women. Speaker and Facilitator: Clare Fischer, Emerita Professor, GTU and Adjunct Professor at USF will provide an overview of global women’s leadership, indicating the role of Indonesian activists in the struggle against certain forms of gender injustice. She will focus on groups working to challenge global exploitation of women (human trafficking and domestic workers).. 3 Thu 4:00pm.The Institute of International Studies is sponsoring a lecture by constitutional lawyer and Salon blogger/journalist Glenn Greenwald who will speak on "International Law and Civil Liberties in the Age of Obama," The UNA-USA East Bay is a co-sponsor of the lecture that will be held in the Sutardja Dai Hall, Banatao Auditorium on the UC Berkeley campus. Greenwald worked as a constitutional and civil rights litigator prior to becoming a contributor (columnist and blogger) to Salon.com, where he focuses on political and legal topics. CANCELLED.

17 Thu 4:00pm. The Institute of International Studies, UC Berkeley, is sponsoring a public lecture by distinguished jurist Richard Goldstone. As the 200 Sanford Ellsberg Lecturer Justice Goldstone will speak on “International Law and Human Rights: The Search for Justice”. Justice Goldstone served as the first chief prosecutor of the United Nation International Criminal Tribunal. The UNA-USA East Bay Chapter is co-sponsor of the lecture that will be held in the Sutardja Dal Hall, Banatao Auditorium  on the UC Berkeley Campus.

24 Thu 4:00 pm. The Institute of International Studies and the Institute of Government Studies, UC Berkeley, are sponsoring a public lecture by Richard H. Solomon. As part of the Harold Smith Lecture Series Dr. Solomon, president of the United States Institute of Peace since 1991, will speak on “Negotiating in an Asymmetric World.” His work as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 1989 to 1992 included negotiation of the Cambodia Peace Treaty. The UNA-USA East Bay Chapter is co-sponsor of the lecture that will be held in the Toll Room of the Alumni House on the UC Berkeley Campus.
