UNA-USA is dedicated to educating, inspiring and mobilizing Americans to support the principles and vital work of the United Nations, strengthening the United Nations system, promoting constructive United States leadership in that system, and achieving the goals of the UN Charter

The UNA-USA East Bay hosts and sponsors many different kinds of events during the calendar year, from public conferences concerning the UN and the US, to a Spring Film Festival at the Pacific Film Archive Theater on the UC Berkeley campus, to the Run For Peace held every October at the Berkeley Marina

June

8-10 Sun-Tue. UNA-USA Council of Chapters and Divisions (CCD) Annual Meeting. Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Washington DC.This is an important opportunity for UN activists to come together in our nation's capital for three days of intensive education, sharing of lessons learned and best practices, skills-building, networking and advocacy.

Annual Japanese Lantern Festival for Peace. Aquatic Park, Berkeley.

September

21 Sun UN International Peace Day. “Climate and Conflict:  the link and rationale behind the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.”. Speaker: Professor Stephen Schnieder, climate expert from Stanford and member of the UN's IPCC. Location: International House, Berkeley.

21 Sun 10th Annual Run for Peace, Cesar Chavez Park, Berkeley. Details to follow.

October

24 Fri. UN Day. 3rd Annual Global Citizen Awards will be presented to individuals and organizations of the East Bay achieving exemplary results implementing the MDGs internationally or in the East Bay. The event will include a banquet, music, and entertainment to celebrate the 63rd Anniversary of the United Nations. Location: International House, Berkeley. Details to follow.

Speaker: Terje Rod-Larsen, former UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Personal Representative of the Secretary-General to the PLO. 26 Saturday 11:00am. Annual General Meeting and Symposium celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. "Human Rights Beseiged!" symposium beginning at 1:30pm with featured speaker Jamil Dakwar, Advocacy Director for ACLU's national Human Rights Program. Location: Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Ave., Berkeley. Members and the general public are invited to attend. The AGM (11-12:30) includes membership voting ballot for 2008 Board of Directors (nominee bios); lunch at 1:45pm; meet your Chapter's Board of Directors and Advisory Council.

10 Monday 7:30 pm. Human Rights Day 2007: Update on Burma. The UN Association-USA East Bay and International House will host two human rights specialists from Burma: Ruth Mauricio and Nyunt Than. The latter is head of the Burmese-American Democratic Alliance, San Francisco. This program is part of I-House's Globalization Series. International House, 2299 Piedmont Avenue, Berkeley.

3 Saturday 1:30-2:45pm. Northern California Division of UNA-USA meeting. Featured speaker: Jan Kavan, former President of the UN General Assembly and former Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic:. 21 Sunday 11:30am. United Nations 62nd Anniversary: East Bay Celebration including Flag of Nations parade, ceremonies and luncheon with speaker at Jack London Square, Oakland.

24 Wednesday 6:00-8:45pm. United Nations 62nd Anniversary Banquet and Celebration Program at International House, UC Berkelely. Organized by UNA East Bay Chapter in cooperation with International House. The theme for UN Day will be "Water for Life: the link with global warming and food, and prospects to achieve UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)." Come hear about this increasingly complex set of local and global challenges. Learn what can be done in coming decades, and what you can do.

11 - Aug. 25 "Art for Humanity United Nations Goals" exhibit at Addison Street Windows Gallery, 2018 Addison St., Berkeley. Opening reception Thursday, July 12, 6-8pm. This exhibit reflects the importance of international agreement to support the humane goals of the United Nations and the dignity of all. Artwork by Berkeley City College Alumni. Organized by BCC art instructor Evelyn Glaubman.
