Welcome from the UNA-USA East Bay Advocacy Committee
Who We Are, What We Do
The Advocacy Committee is one of the Chapter’s original committees, going back to the first days of our existence over forty years ago. Advocacy matters come in different sizes and shapes. Often, the committee considers an issue based on the priorities that have been agreed on by the UNA-USA chapters across the nation. Other times, the committee acts on issues about which our particular members of Congress are engaged, lending our support when we are in agreement, and explaining our position on issues when we are aiming at a different outcome. Sometimes, the committee receives requests from our senators and representatives or from Chapter members with special expertise asking for our support of their position; we take those requests under consideration and analyze the issue in order to recommend a position to our board of directors.Given the increased focus on Congress’s legislative mandate in the current Obama administration, the Advocacy Committee will be offering a regular diet of different kinds of information that will enable you, the reader, to be a more informed participant in a wide variety of issues involving the Chapter’s advocacy efforts with Congress, the media, and the public. There is room in this process for your input, so please get in touch with the Committee to delve further into your possible participation (ritam@berkeley.edu).
