UNA-USA National High School Essay Contest

 

The United Nations Association-USA, East Bay Chapter would like to invite high school students from the greater East Bay to submit entries to the 2006 United Nations Association-USA National Essay Contest.  A UNA-USA East Bay applicant, Kevin Zhou, of Monte Vista High School in Danville, was the first place national winner in 2005. 

 

2007 Contest Rules

 

Eligibility  The Essay Contest is open to all US students in grades 9-12.

 

Essay Requirements  Essays should be no longer than 1,500 words, typed and double-spaced with citation of all sources materials.   Complete rules, teacher support, suggested resources, essay rubrics, and previous winning essays are available at the UNA-USA National web site (www.unausa.org).  

 

Submissions  Each submission must be accompanied by the UNA-USA Essay Contest Entry Form and Release Form (available at www.unausa.org).

 

Deadline:  January 5, 2007

This year's National High School Essay Contest on the United Nations asks students to tackle the challenge of improving maternal health. Students will write a letter to the President of the United States answering the following:

 

1.   Why is ensuring maternal health so important?


2.   What should the United States do to improve maternal health and ensure that Millennium Development Goal Five can be reached by 2015?

 

First Prize     $3,000. The national winner also receives airfare and accommodations for him/herself and one parent or guardian to attend UNA-USA's Member's Day, held at United Nations Headquarters in March or April of 2005, as an honored guest. There, the winner will receive his or her award in a formal ceremony before UNA-USA's membership.  Second Prize  $1,500.  Third Prize  $750.  Winners also receive local prizes.
